Father’s Day

Posted on

The day is fast approaching when dad’s everywhere are forced by law to have a lie-in, get served endless mugs of coffee and hog the TV remote control for the entire evening. Yes, it’s Father’s Day. A special time to celebrate these unsung heroes of the home, because as Homer Simpson once explained to Bart: “Fatherhood isn’t easy, not like motherhood”.

So we have donned our thinking caps to search for some Chocovenyl ways to honour our dads. We have scoured the land to look for the perfect gifts. Something to put a smile on their faces and let them know that they are the bestest.

Here are some  well designed free prinables to get you started from the wonderful Hello Lucky blog and a Card Tie created by Ruban Collectif: DIY Father's Day

Check out our Father’s Day Pinboard at the wonderful design land of Pinterest packed with ideas: Father's Day Pinterest

We particularly loved the back-rub t-shirt and there’s a super cool idea for wrapping a Father’s Day gift in the style of a short and tie.

Father’s Day with Chocolove

Two areas started to emerge as perfect for our Chocovenyl designs; presents which can only be for a dad and presents which will help add coolness to their dad ‘cave’. This is what we came up with:

Top Dad

What better way to thank most deserving gentleman of the family than with this rather fine vintage poster emblazoned with the words “Top Hat For The Top Dad”. This can be personalised to include the dad’s name along with a short message. It’s guaranteed to add a bit of refinement and sophistication to any study or dad room. Top Hat Wall Sticker by Chocovenyl for Fathers Day

Dreamy Skylight

Finding the perfect gift requires blue sky thinking and that’s the inspiration behind this magical skylight. It allows dad’s to add a virtual window to their study or room – a window which, every time they gaze into, will be reminded of how much he means to you. This allows you to have a personalised message around the outer border, such as our own choice, “Love you to the sky & back”.

Scrabble Tile Stickers

Why should fridge doors have all the fun when it comes to leaving daft and touching personal messages, clever word of the day or just about anything he can come up with. The stickers are moveable.  This is everything dad needs to write his own stylish graffiti on the walls of his room. It could be an inspirational message or a memorable football score. It really is one of those gifts that keeps on giving.

 Silly Walks Wall Sticker

If there’s one thing dad’s are great at it, it’s being silly. And there’s no better way to celebrate this than a classic Ministry of Silly Walks sticker for the study or wherever dad goes to hide. The cross-stitch style also gives it the feel of a retro computer games for that extra wallop of cool. We hope there is something here which is just right for your dad. And if you’re a dad who’s secretly reading and itching for something we’ve shown, you just have to keep browsing this page and coughing loudly until somebody notices. Or you could always attach some post-it notes to the monitor – but maybe that’s a bit much.

Our Queen’s Jubilee

Posted on

Here at Chocovenyl HQ, we have been looking for the best ideas to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee year.

We were after anything a bit different, inspired and “made in Britain”. We wanted something which could capture something about what it truly means to be British. There are so many interesting developments these days which are helping to bring manufacturing back to Britain, reviving the British high-street.

The British designer-maker market is also bubbling with all sorts of wonderful designs. There is a sense of “spring in the air” from your local supermarket’s “made in Britain” produce to the many wonderful and creative designer-maker brands like Thornback & Peel, Naomi Paul, Mason Cash. There are many more which can be found via notonthehighstreet.com, etsy.com, made.com and our fave llustre.com.

It seems like there is a real move to get back to our roots and regain our pride in making, rather then relying on cheap imports and, oh boy!, we have so much to offer.

For inspiration we took a plunge into the creative waters of Pinterest and came up with this wonderful collection:

Jubilee Pinterest

Jubilee Pinterest

We found so many wonderful designs and icons of Britishness. Our favourite trait is the world famous British humour. After all one needs something cheerful on a rainy day.. And who better than Monty Pyton to represent the inventiveness of British comedy. The Ministry of Silly Walks is an iconic image we can’t get out of our heads so we decided to plant it in yours…:

Ministry of silly walks

Ministry of silly walks

Yes, the iconic image of John Cleese doing his silly walk.

It’s from a Monty Python sketch which was first shown on the BBC in 1970. It involves a nameless civil servant walking through the streets of London and doing a variety of incredibly silly walks. He eventually reaches his workplace, where a brass plaque reveals the building to be the ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’.

It is this mix of eccentricity, classical style, respectability and an ability to laugh at ourselves which we think is perfect.  And besides, it just makes us chuckle.

Silly Walks Cross Stitch

And now for something completely different. Here is our own Silly Walks Cross Stitch Wall Stripe . This set has a natural look and will fit many decor styles. Available in black and red stitch colours or black only stitch both on linen look background.

Silly Walks Cross Stitch

Cross Stitch Bunting.

From a distance the cross-stitch looks like an ornate pattern and it is only when you look a bit closer that they reveal themselves to be a dedication to HRH. In contrast to what you think of wall stickers, especially vinyl we like our PVC free fabric art to stand out in a natural feel and texture and also reference a good old craft. Applied in one line adds up to about 1m.

Cross Stitch Bunting

We would like to think that if the Queen were to pick her decoration for Buckingham Palace she’d choose our Cross Stitch bunting..

Just before you off to get ready for your Street Party…

Choco loves Owls

Posted on

Owls have been around for millions of years and have long been a part of human folklore and legend. They have been referenced to in culture countless times, depicted in cave paintings and in Egyptian hieroglyphics. They have been reproduced as objects of admiration, and have held many symbolic roles including wisdom and prosperity. Owls are a particular favourite with crafters around the world today.

Is it the big mesmerising front facing eyes that have captivated us for centuries? Owls carry wonderful mystery and have an alluring sense of danger about them. They approach in silence and most owls are dwellers of the night. Did you know? The female is often more brightly coloured then the male. Owls can turn head a very impressive 270 degrees. The ear tufts are for display only! They are not ears at all.

Scrabulous!

The wonderful world of Scrabble has been bringing friends, families and lovers together for years; grandparents and their grandchildren have played over steaming cups of cocoa, whilst couples have thumbed the tiles thoughtfully in front of roaring fires.

Scrabble Fabric wall stickers, wood design
Scrabble has travelled around the world; it has entertained children on aeroplanes, pupils on school coaches and squabbling siblings in the back seats of cars. Families have played round campfires, in snow topped chalets and on sandy beaches across faraway shores.

SCRABBLE for iPad By Electronic Arts
And still the Scrabble journey continues to grow… It’s even gone high tech; people ponder Scrabble words with strangers over the internet, with friends on Facebook and those delightful little tiles pop up on ipads, netbooks, smart phones and kindles. One thing’s for sure: this timeless board game knows how to stay connected.

Scrabble Pinspiration

At Chocovenyl we were tickled pink to discover how this trend has grown in new and gorgeous forms. Our Scrabble pin board is full of inspirational trends that left us in a Scrabble spin!

The invitations are utterly adorable for a child’s birthday party, and they are so pretty they will double up as a beautiful keep sake.
And for the grown-ups? Well we are itching to get a cup of espresso out of one of these little Scrabble cups, but only if it comes with a Scrabble cupcake or Scrabble cookie!

But our favourite Scrabble find was ingeniously using Scrabble tiles as place settings- fabulous for a fancy dinner party or a special occasion.

We are delighted to introduce our very own Letter Tiles wall stickers that have had our heads spinning with all the wonderful ways we could use them. They come in classic wood or contemporary cool denim. We are selling full sets in small or mini size or we can offer individual letters.

We think they would make a perfect gift for Father’s Day or just any other day. The beautiful PVC free fabric means they will compliment any surface and like all our stickers, they are movable, so the fun is endless! We’re thinking cuties notes, clever and witty phrases, and special birthday messages – even wedding proposals!

Who is the mysterious Mister Mista?

Posted on

Highway & Ozzie wall Stickers
Some of the popular designs we feature on Chocovenyl are from an artist known only as Mister Mista. He brings us a strange and kooky world of floating eyeballs, gorgeous retro cars and spooky alphabets.

Monsters Height Chart ArrrghTo Z Wall Stickers

But what kind of a mind could have created such odd and wonderful designs?

Well, Mister Mista has nothing to do with the 80’s pop group with the same sounding name – remember ‘Broken Wings’?

No, it is the name of the company set-up in 2007 by a top Australian designer called Travis Price. As a freelance designer he has worked for a host of big name clients such as Mambo, Sony, Vodafone and Intel.

Travis Price aka Mister Mista

It was during his childhood in Victoria that his love of skateboarding and graffiti developed into a passion for cool designs. Despite now being one of Australia’s most renowned designers, he can still be seen whizzing around the streets of Victoria on his skateboard.

He set-up Mister Mista with his wife Renee; shortly after the couple had their first child. The idea was to create a quirky and off-beat range of designs which were especially for kids – not adult designs which have been scaled down. Travis provides the artistic vision for Mister Mista while Renee handles the business side of things.

How did you find your way into illustration as a career?

I guess like most I grew up as a kid loving to draw. But once finishing high school it made sense to go off to uni to become a graphic designer. I quite enjoyed it but after 10 years in the design industry I decided to make the switch to become a freelance illustrator. Five years on I couldn’t be happier…I love it. Technically design gave me the perfect tools and experience to make a smooth cross over.

Travis prints

What inspires you?

Ohhhh this is hard…..If you look at my commercial folio you’ll see a few styles running through there. I’m inspired by a diverse range of things. In regards to kids I love Richard Scarry  and Asterix. I also love the old fairy tales that always had that sense of scary evil darkness to them…sadly I think that missing now.I have always been inspired by skateboard design….especially the 90’s with guys like Jim Phillips. Really enjoy the hotrod illustration scene too.I love all things retro……my secret is House Industries

Saying all that, when it comes to Mister Mista…our kids have been our inspiration. Our products are normally themed around what they’re into.

Travis kids

What is Mister Mista brand about?

At its inception we just felt that the boys sector was missing that gritty silly boy fun. It was missing that kookiness that boys bring to any family. Boys weren’t made to match your decor….they’re into dirty pirate ships…not preppy nautical sailing vessels!!! This is what we are about.

What is your favourite subject matter to draw?

I love character design. As you see all our products are based around characters. True character creation should exude a sense of personality!!! I also like for characters to have imperfections too.

How was your bedroom decorated when you were a child?

Ha Ha it was mainly the 80’s…chinese style puma doona cover (to protect me from monsters). Sesame street sheets. Early Micheal Jackson and Star Wars posters along with pristine tonka toys….never left in the sand pit!!! Oh and Castle Grey Skull was in the corner!!! Really it was a mismatch…but it was awesome…..I love that interior design seems to be heading back to a more eclectic aesthetic.

What are your fondest memories from childhood?

Going to see ET at the drive in theatre. Got to stay up late in our pyjamas, wrapped in blankets in the back of a little orange Datsun. Think I may have cried at the end.

Will your designs find their way onto your child’s walls?

Ha Ha yeah there’s a few of my designs scattered through out the house but we have pictures all through the house by different artists. We love the idea of being surrounded by illustration and the kids love it. You can buy so many great prints from illustrators over the internet. My favourite is some Nate Wragg prints.

You can check out my work at www.mistermista.comMister Mista Facebookwww.travisprice.com.aubyprice Facebook

Keep your eyes peeled for more work from the odd and wonderful world of Mister Mista – that’s if Travis can find time between his young family and skateboarding.

Dino Wonderland

Posted on

Did you realise that it’s 15 years since Jurassic Park was first released – it’s enough to make you feel prehistoric.

But the great thing about dinosaurs is that they never really get old. Our kids love them now just as much as us bigger kids loved them back in the day. And here at Chocovenyl we’ve been walking in a dino wonderland recently, inspired by some of the amazing dinosaur goodies we’ve collected together on our Pinterest board.

Dinosaurs Chocovenyl Pinboard

There must be something about dinosaurs which gets the creative juices firing. Something we really loved was using cardboard and a bit of imagination to help transform your cherubic child into a snarly Tyrannosaurus Rex. Or you could make up your own prehistoric creature – you just need to add ‘-osaurus’ to the end of any name.

There are also plenty of dino themed designs here on Chocovenyl as well to help create the perfect bedroom for any budding Brontosaurus – and you won’t have to spend the $63 million it cost to create Jurassic Park either.

We have the gentle vintage inspired charm of Belle & Boo’s Dino Ride designs.

Dino Ride Wall Stickers

Or the wonderful illustrations of Brighton illustrator Jillian Phillips and her Dino Fun collection. And even dinosaurs need to know when it’s time to got to bed, so we also have the Dino Stick-A-Clock designed by your very own Chocovenyl.

Dino Fun and Dino Clock Fabric Wall Stickers

If all this dino talk has sent you into a frenzy, then you might want to organise an adventure to hunt down some of these fearsome beasts. A good place to start your family’s quest is the Dinosaur Adventure Park in Norfolk. This has everything an aspiring dino hunter could want: dinosaur trails, creepy crawlies, mazes and lots of rides which end with “-osaurus”.

The other destination you will want to track down is the Natural History Museum in London. This has free entry and offers one of the best collections of dinosaurs fossils in the world, including the 105 foot long Diplodocus, known affectionately as Dippy.

And if you can’t decide whether to go or not you could turn into a Staygosaurus. Sorry, that was one dino pun too far…

Giveaway Competition.

Tell us what children’s theme you’re interested in and what Chocovenyl wall stickers are your favourite and comment here and on our Facebook page.

The winner will be randomly selected on 27.4.12 and will choose a Mini set from our collection. We ship internationally.

Fairytales with Chocolove

Posted on

Thanks for stopping by at Chocovenyl’s blog, a kingdom of mod patterns, bold colours and a good helping of whimsy.

This week I’m thinking Fairy Tales.

” Mirror, mirror on the wall…move over. We need the wall space, because there’s a new princess in town. And something tells me she’s not going to be running away from a wicked witch any time soon, because she looks pretty self-reliant, despite her noodle arms.” – Delilah, coolmompicks.com

Princess Fabric Wall Stickers by Chocovenyl

Another all-time favourite from a design hero Helen Dardik is Little Red-Riding Hood. I just love a good villain and they don’t come much more villainous than a Grandma-eating Wolf!Red Riding Hood fabric wall stickers by Helen Dardik

Fairytales sink deep into our children’s hearts and stay there forever; teach them the importance of making the right choices, ignite imagination and feature some pretty sassy Princesses too! We wanted to capture the beauty and essence of fairy tales, so we created a selection of wonderful wall stickers to bring a little magic and sparkle to your walls. Head over to our site to see the full range.

Fairy tales often feature the great outdoors and nature; forests, talking animals, poison apples, frogs and fairies, need I go on? At Chocovenyl we want to protect nature and the stories she inspires, which is why our wall stickers are as eco-friendly as possible. They are made with PVC-free fabric, are biodegradable and are printed with eco-inks.

Now let’s have some eco-friendly craft fun.

You can recreate your favourite fairy tales at home with some of these simple craft DIYs.
